Using toys as a reward system is a great way to elevate your training, keep it fun, and get that energy out!Â
A few things to keep in mind:
- Find a toy your dog already likes and build off that.Â
- Your dog should not have free access to this toy if you want to use it for training.
- This toy can be a ball, tug, ball on a string, rope toy, or flirt pole (using a flush toy can be done, but it is not great for outdoor use).
Teaching your dog how to unlock the reward:
- Give the dog a clear understanding of what gives them access to the toy by using a marker word such as: Yes, Get it, Okay, or Go.
- Charge your chosen marker work by saying it and giving them access to the toy. For example: Saying “Yes” and throwing the ball.
Creating intensity and drive for the toy:
- Teasing the dog with the toy can build drive. Be careful not to over-frustrate your dog, and diminish its motivation.
- Start by teasing them for a short time until you see them get excited, and then use your marker word and give them access to the toy.
- This method is how we start getting the dog to work for the reward.
Channeling your toy drive:
- So now that your dog is super excited about its toy, we need to channel that energy.
- Start with a basic obedience game to teach them how to focus their excitement and work to access the toy.
- For example: Tease them with the toy, then ask for a basic behavior such as sit, then use your marker word and give them the toy.
Putting it all together:
- Now your dog knows how to unlock the reward.Â
- You have created a drive for the item.
- You have got your dog to do basic commands it already knows for the toy.
- Now you can put it all together and start teaching them new things and getting them to work harder for the toy!Â
